Fetal acoustic stimulation, an adjunct to external cephalic version: a blinded, randomized crossover study
Article Abstract:
Acoustic stimulation of fetuses in the breech position may cause fetuses to move to a position that allows them to be turned externally to a head-first position. Researchers compared the success of external attempts to turn fetuses with and without fetal acoustic stimulation, which elicits fetal movement and heart rate changes. Eleven of 12 fetuses exposed to acoustic stimulation were able to be turned externally to the head-first position. Fetuses moved from a midline spine position to a spine lateral position after acoustic stimulation. Only one of 11 fetuses not receiving acoustic stimulation could be turned successfully. Eight of 23 fetuses were delivered by cesarean section, a rate of 34.7%. The rate would have been higher if more fetuses had not been turned to a head-first position.

Preterm external cephalic version in an outpatient environment
Article Abstract:
Attempts to turn a fetus to the head down position (cephalic version) before birth by external manipulation may be successful if done before 37 weeks of pregnancy. External cephalic version may reduce the rate of cesarean deliveries. Researchers analyzed 133 version attempts in 114 pregnancies for the success rate and complications. The Ranney technique of external cephalic version was used. A total of 114 version attempts were made before 37 weeks of gestation, and 90 were successful (79%). Sixty-three of the 90 successes (84%) resulted in vaginal delivery with the infant's head emerging first. Nine of the 19 version attempts (47%) made at 37 weeks or later resulted in vaginal deliveries. Versions resulted in a reduced cesarean delivery rate without complications.

Pregnancy outcome after successful external cephalic version
Article Abstract:
The rate of cesarean delivery appears to be no higher in pregnant women who have an external cephalic version, according to a study of 92 such women compared to 184 women who did not require it. External cephalic version is used to turn breech babies around so their head comes out first instead of their feet.
