Arteriovenous malformation of the mandible: life-threatening complications during tooth extraction
Article Abstract:
The case of a 13-year-old girl who hemorrhaged severely during a routine tooth extraction illustrates the possible consequences of malformed blood vessels in the lower jaw. The patient complained of pain and bleeding in a permanent lower molar. The dentist extracted the tooth which caused massive, uncontrollable bleeding. The patient was transported to a hospital for emergency care. Doctors ordered an arteriogram which revealed malformed arteries and veins in the left side of the lower jaw. 'Clotting' coils were placed in major arteries to plug the vessels and slow the bleeding. The patient underwent surgery to remove a portion of the lower jaw bone. A temporary plate that accommodated the vessel defect was shaped and implanted. Six months later, doctors began permanent reconstruction of the jawbone.

Intrabony neurilemmoma: diagnosis and management
Article Abstract:
The case of a 22-year-old woman illustrates a rare case of neurilemmoma inside the mandible, or jawbone. Neurilemmoma is a benign tumor that arises from Schwann cells, which are cells that surround many nerves. It usually occurs in the skin or mucous membranes. The woman had come for her regular dental exam and the tumor was seen on the mouth X-ray. It was removed from the bone and microscopic examination of tissue samples revealed that it was a neurilemmoma. It probably arose from the mandibular nerve. Surgery is the best treatment and the tumor does not normally recur.
