Alcohol problems and public health policy
Article Abstract:
Scientific studies can be useful in predicting the public health impact of laws that restrict alcohol sale and consumption. States and local governments can use alcoholic beverage policies to raise tax revenue, reduce injuries and illness, and regulate drinking, goals that sometimes are in conflict. Banning alcohol in geographically-isolated communities seems to reduce alcohol-related problems. This effect can reverse when alcohol is available nearby. Studying the outcome of local policies can guide the development of regulations that are likely to improve public health.

New Findings in the Genetics of Alcoholism
Article Abstract:
Researchers continue to study the genetic factors linked to alcoholism. These factors explain about half the risk for alcoholism. They are confirmed by studies of adopted children showing that children of alcoholics who are raised by non-alcoholics still have an increased risk of alcoholism. Mutations in the gene for aldehyde hydrogenase cause many Asians to have an intense reaction to alcohol and consequently a low risk for alcohol abuse. Alcohol abuse has also been linked to the dopamine receptor. Brain function is often different in alcohol abusers and their children.
