Prevalence of corporal punishment among students in Washington state schools
Article Abstract:
Regulations prohibiting corporal punishment appear to deter, but not eliminate, its use. Researchers surveyed the use of corporal punishment at 1,018 elementary and secondary schools in Washington state in 1992. Washington has no statewide prohibition, but many school districts had policies. Almost 11% permitted corporal punishment, and 3.2% reported using it during the 1991-1992 school year. Rural schools, schools with fewer than 500 students, and schools offering kindergarten through eighth grade or kindergarten through twelfth grade were more likely to report using corporal punishment. Ninety-three incidents of corporal punishment were reported. Seventy-eight occurred in 27 of the 111 schools that permitted its use, whereas only 15 incidents occurred in the 1,007 schools where policies forbade its use.

Safe storage of handguns: what do the police recommend?
Article Abstract:
Many police departments recommend trigger locks and portable lockboxes with equal frequency for safe storage of handguns, but officers themselves may prefer lockboxes. Investigators posing as parents of 3-year-old and 10-year-old children asked an officer at 93 police departments nationwide for advice about safe storage of handguns. Fifty-nine percent recommended trigger locks, 52% recommended lockboxes, 32% recommended separating guns from ammunition, and 7% recommended disposing of the gun. However, 28% of respondents reported using lockboxes and 6% used trigger locks in their own homes.
