Firm says PRO and 2 others stole review criteria
Article Abstract:
InterQual filed suit in Mar 1992 against Parkside Health Management Corp, Datamed Inc and Crescent Counties Foundation for Medical Care, charging that the utilization review firms violated the copyright on InterQual's Intensity of Service/Severity of Illness/Discharge (ISD) system. InterQual asserted that the three Chicago, IL, area firms used its pre- and post-admission review method without paying for it. InterQual asked for injunctions to restrain the firms from committing further copyright violations. The Boston, MA, firm also asked that Parkside and Datamed return profits from the ISD system.

RAND/AMA set appropriateness guidelines for 7 procedures
Article Abstract:
Rand, the AMA and 12 medical centers completed medical procedure ratings that will help establish practice guidelines for seven common, but controversial medical procedures. Extensive literature reviews and expert panels were used to propose criteria for deciding whether or not to perform procedures such as coronary bypass surgery, coronary balloon angioplasty and hysterectomy. The guidelines will hopefully diminish the large, unexplained variations in medical practice.
