Flying high in America
Article Abstract:
British nurse Amanda Wilcock is not surprised at the shortage of nurses in the UK, since it was low morale, low wages and poor working conditions which led her to move to the US. Wilcock is now working in San Diego, CA, where she enjoys better career prospects, a higher quality of life and a salary nearly double that which she used to earn in London. Wilcock believes that in the UK nursing has been badly hit by cutbacks, with hospitals often lacking essential equipment. She also finds that nurses in the US are respected more, enjoy more autonomy and have a better training system.

Axe hangs over community care
Article Abstract:
Community care services in the UK are coming under extreme pressure as purchasers and providers of these services clash over funding priorities. In some places, purchasers are cutting down funding to community services as reducing acute services is too politically sensitive. Experts fear that services will become increasingly inaccessible, with trusts forcing people to visit their GP rather than using community care services.
