Follow-up after day surgery: how well do patients cope?
Article Abstract:
Recent research has indicated that patients who undergo day surgery can experience physical difficulties, of which health professionals are generally aware, but also family and social problems, about which much less is known. Such difficulties should be taken into account when educating both nursing staff and patients about day surgery. It is vital that patients are given full information about the problems they may encounter, especially relating to the likely period of recovery and time required away from work.

Paediatric day surgery
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted into the quality of hospital and post-discharge care of children undergoing day surgery. A sample of nine boys and one girl was studied through observation and parental interview. Most families received little advance information or psychological preparation. Only three children were discharged the same day and post-operative advice was inadequate. Parents considered pre-operative fasting and waiting times were too long. They desired more information and home support.

How acute and community nurses are sharing skills
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom community health care services will be impacted by the anticipated growth in day-case surgery to 50% of all surgery by the year 2000, with the best method of patient care expected to result from skill-sharing between community nurses and those working in hospitals. Community nurses are able to offer highly competent skills in areas such as ear syringing which hospital-based nurses may rarely practice. A pilot study undertaken by Frenchay Healthcare NHS Trust is described.
