Food deserts: what's in a name?
Article Abstract:
It has been known for some time that poor people living in the UK's inner city areas often have only very limited access to fresh, healthy food such as fruit and vegetables. They usually live a long way from large supermarkets, and do not have any means of getting to these supermarkets. Instead, they must rely on local shops, where prices are high and fresh fruit and vegetables, when available, are of poor quality. This situation has been worsening recently as the trend towards out-of-town shopping developments has expanded. It is now time to make policy-makers and practitioners in areas such as town planning aware of the consequences of their actions.

A public health strategy for England: how does the Green Paper shape up?
Article Abstract:
The UK government's Green Paper 'Our Healthier Nation' addresses two significant defects in earlier public health strategies, namely excessive emphasis on personal lifestyles and the failure to recognize the challenge presented to public health by the extensive inequalities in health in the UK. The new document seems to indicate that the government is strongly committed to dealing with the basic causes of poor health and to minimizing inequalities in health service provision. However, it gives little detail about how improvements in health service provision will be achieved and maintained.

How easy is it to extend the health promotion role of community pharmacists?
Article Abstract:
Community pharmacies offer very easy access for the general public, and have therefore been increasingly seen over recent years as an ideal place for health promotion work. Recent research has shown that both customers and pharmacists have a generally positive view of the health promotion role of community pharmacies, but that there are number of practical limitations which must be taken into account. The main difficulties are lack of space and time and the cost involved.
