Novel therapies to prevent diabetic retinopathy
Article Abstract:
New therapies under study may help prevent diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of adult blindness in developed countries. High blood glucose damages the blood vessels of the eye and other organs, prevented thusfar only with frequent blood testing and insulin use. Two drugs being tested block the formation and action of a glucose byproduct thought to cause some of the damage. Others address the abnormal blood vessel growth, blood flow, cell death and glucose transport that affect the retinas of people with diabetes. Researchers hope to develop therapies that prevent retinopathy rather than simply slow its progression.

MediCaring Project to demonstrate, evaluate innovative end-of-life program for chronically ill
Article Abstract:
Two organizations dedicated to improving the care of the dying have developed a project to test a new approach to end-of-life care. The Center to Improve Care of the Dying and Americans for Better Care of the Dying have begun the MediCaring National Demonstration and Evaluation Project. The project will enroll patients with congestive heart failure, obstructive lung disease, stroke or dementia. Unlike cancer, these diseases do not have a brief period of decline immediately before death. MediCaring will provide coordinated care, including home health care.
