Foreign exchange: the imposition of local pay bargaining in other countries has increasedpolitical awareness and militancy among health workers

An internation conference on nurses' pay has warned of opposition to localand performance related pay if local bargaining is introduced in the NHS. A ready inmanagement studies at Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh, claimed that the rapid move fromnational pay to local pay bargaining in New Zealand increased politicaly awareness andmilitancy amongst health workers. Executive director of the International Council of Nursing(ICN) Connie Holleran talked of the miltant stance adopted by health workers in Scandinavia dueto the impositon of local pay schemes.

A national insult
Article Abstract:
The government's offer of a 1% national pay rise for nurses has been met with angry responses from the profession. The issue has been aggravated by the 2.5% pay rise awarded to consultants, and even larger raises received by various trust executives. Nurses are traditionally anti-strike, however, many feel that industrial action may be the only way forward.

Article Abstract:
Local pay bargaining for nurses and other health workers has been introduced over a three year period despite being rejected by nurses. Unions now need to get the best deal possible for their members by putting pressure on management in the form of petitions, demonstrations and even industrial action.
