Fraud-busting efforts get house seal of approval
Article Abstract:
Delegates to the Interim Meeting of the American Medical Assn (AMA) approved of its efforts to stop physician fraud and misconduct. The AMA voiced concern about working too closely with government regulatory agencies that prosecute physicians. The AMA has unsuccessfully lobbied for legislation to prohibit overcharging for services and other financial fraud. A Board of Trustees report suggested enlisting private organizations in efforts to detect medical fraud on a local level in order to decrease the burden on state medical societies.

Ethics panel spells out physician role in executions
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn (AMA) Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs has released guidelines regarding the role of physicians in executions. While physicians may testify whether or not a defendant is competent to stand trial and may certify the death of an executed prisoner, they may not prescribe a lethal drug, administer it, find an injection site or start an intravenous line. The AMA issued the guidelines because many of the 37 states that permit executions specify some type of physician participation.

Canadians vow 'zero tolerance' for sex abuse by doctors
Article Abstract:
The Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons asked an independent task force to investigate charges of sexual abuse of patients by physicians.
