Issues concerning the trade relationships between the North and the South Americas are discussed, with particular attention on the effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement on work environment safety. Opinions claiming that the agreement neglects health concerns are investigated.

Issues relating to measures to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gas are presented, with particular focus on the role of business corporations. The United States accounts for 25% of this form of pollution, but does not support the Kyoto protocol which includes 38 different nations.

The introduction of North American health and safety legislation has resulted in the number of work-related fatalities in Mexico falling from 1,891 deaths in 1993 to 1,150 deaths 1998. Truck safety has also been improved.
