Frequency and characteristics of silent dementia among elderly Japanese-American men: the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study
Article Abstract:
Many elderly people may have mild dementia that is not recognized by family members. Researchers interviewed family members of 191 men who had been diagnosed with dementia through their participation in the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study. Almost one-fourth of the family members interviewed had not recognized the signs of dementia. Half failed to notice memory loss in men with mild dementia and 13% failed to notice this symptom in men with severe dementia. Even when family members noticed memory loss, half failed to consult a doctor. Those with mild dementia were more likely to escape notice by family members.

Prevalence of dementia in older Japanese-American men in Hawaii: the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study
Article Abstract:
Japanese-American men in Hawaii appear to have a greater chance of having Alzheimer's disease than their compatriots in Japan. This was the conclusion of researchers in the Honolulu Heart Program, which has followed 3,734 Japanese-Americans living in Oahu since 1965. About 2% of the men between 71 and 74 had Alzheimer's dementia and 33% of those between 85 and 93 had the disease. These rates were higher than those seen in Japan but similar to those seen in Europeans and Americans. The prevalence of vascular dementia was similar to that seen in Japan.
