From Spain
Article Abstract:
The population of Spain numbers 38.5 million people, and the country consists of 17 communities. Although the number of rheumatologists (physicians specializing in rheumatic diseases) is currently 280, a total of 530 rheumatologists is needed to reach a ratio of one rheumatologist for every 75,000 persons. Thirty new rheumatologists per year are being trained in order to achieve the ideal number of rheumatologists for the population. However, it is estimated that the required number of rheumatologists will increase due to the rise in the elderly population. Other countries have a shortage of rheumatologists, as well as an uneven distribution of these specialists throughout the country. The government has created rheumatology posts at small hospitals and increased training of hospital doctors in rheumatology. Rheumatologists in Spain have received their medical training in Spanish hospitals, the United Kingdom, France, and Mexico, but few have been trained in the United States. The insufficient number of these specialists has resulted in an increased workload for the current number of rheumatologists. In addition, more research in the area of rheumatology is needed, and government funding for such research has increased within the past two years. To the Internet and beyond
Article Abstract:
The printing industry, which reports worldwide sales of $292 billion in 1998, is not in decline in spite of predictions by many observers that the Internet would mean obsolescence for traditional ink-on-paper. An industry exec says the drive to 'Web-enable' everything is often forced and does not actually work. A consultant identifies areas best suited for online solutions as follows; transferring project files; repairing problem documents; dealing with errors not caught until a printing run; and maintaining consistent pricing. He says wherever the Internet is used to save time or money in areas such as these, it is readily adopted.
