From little acorns
Article Abstract:
Problems identified with a number of products could have been avoided if the manufacturers took more care at the initial development stage. Airbags in cars have been found to cause fatalities to children because they are made to protect men therefore smaller people may be at risk. It has been discovered that some male toiletries which contained alkyl phenol ethoxylates may affect male fertility levels. Some 225 people were seriously hurt and 80 people died in the UK from injuries sustained when their clothes caught fire during 1995.

Enforcement on a shoestring
Article Abstract:
Many successful cases for the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) result in only small fines for the accused. Only eight out of 287 occupational deaths resulted in legal proceedings and only 4% of serious occupational injuries were examined by HSE inspectors, in 1996-97. The HSE's Director General Jenny Bacon points her inspectors carried out over 5,700 preventive visits, in 1996-97. Some observers fear the review of Management Regulations, for health and safety in the workplace, will make them too complex.
