As better training and machines improve safety, speed becomes focus of newest anesthetic drugs
Article Abstract:
The focus of the American Society of Anesthesiologists has shifted from patient safety to the development of more effective anesthetics for outpatient surgeries. In 1982, an ABC-TV '20/20' program on anesthesia-associated deaths focused public and professional interest on patient safety. The ASA established a committee on patient safety and risk management, and put much effort into increasing patient safety throughout the 1980s. Improvements in patient safety have resulted from the development of better anesthesia resident training programs, and of safer anesthesia machines. In the 1990s, the increased number of outpatient surgeries has shifted the focus of the ASA to the development of anesthetics that work quickly and wear off rapidly.

Health woes grow in shrinking world
Article Abstract:
Physicians discussed the emergence of infectious diseases in strange places at the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Widespread travel, immigration and migration are leading to infectious diseases in parts of the world where they have never been seen before. Examples discussed at the conference included dengue and leishmaniasis. This is due in part to the breakdown of public health infrastructures, decreased surveillance, contaminated water supplies and inappropriate use of antibiotics.
