Protein twists and turns in Alzheimer disease
Article Abstract:
Research of Alzheimer disease is driven by a focus on two proteins, tau and APP, thought to underline the affliction. Brains of affected individuals accumulate aberrant forms of both of the proteins, where tau becomes hyperphosphorylated and accumulates in neuritic aggregates and APP is cleaved to produce amyloid-beta protein aggregates.

Gamma secretase-medicated Notch signaling worsens brain damage and functional outcome in ischemic stroke
Article Abstract:
Mice transgenic for antisense Notch and normal mice treated with inhibitors of the Notch-activating enzyme Greek small letter gamma-secretase showed reduced damage to brain cells and improved functional outcome in a model of focal ischemic stroke. These findings suggest that Notch signaling might be a therapeutic target for treatment of stroke and related neurodegenerative conditions.
