Gap between strong, weak hospitals expected to widen
Article Abstract:
The disparity between hospitals that are financially strong and financially weak should widen in 1990. The 1980's saw fierce competition for a decreasing number of in-patient days which resulted in a volatile financial market and an increase in the number of downgrades in hospital bonds. In this kind of market, private, non-profit hospitals with low credit ratings are very susceptible to restrictive revenue growth and increased competition. Therefore, only through consolidations and mergers will these weak hospitals be able to survive.

'Can you give me the name of a doctor?' (medical referral services help physicians; Prologue referral service profiled)
Article Abstract:
Physicians and hospitals have been able to increase business and lower costs through the use of patient referral services. Hospital-sponsored physicians and doctors with their own practices can join services such as Prologue to gain access to sophisticated databases that allow more marketing options than in the past. For example, physicians who are members of Prologue can offer information about themselves and their practices, but only up to 1,600 bits of information. Additional patient referral services are discussed.
