Gateway to the metabolic syndrome
Article Abstract:
A high-fat diet could lead to insulin resistance and the development of the metabolic syndrome, a condition associated with diabetes, heart disease and other ailments. A G-protein-coupled receptor on the surface of insulin-secreting cells in the pancreas senses lipids and might promote the metabolic syndrome under high-fat conditions.

A fresh facet for ouabain action
Article Abstract:
The authors discuss the studies on the ouabain signaling via the plasma membrane. Results suggest that this signaling produces intracellular calcium level oscillations which lead to the transcription factor translocation into the nucleus and gene activation.

Salt abuse: the path to hypertension
Article Abstract:
A new approach for the development of new drugs for the treatment of hypertension is discussed. Findings show that these drugs target the vasculature pathway that responds to high salt intake and hence do not cause any side-effects.
