Isolated chloroma: the effect of early antileukemic therapy
Article Abstract:
It may be advisable to begin chemotherapy when doctors determine that a patient has isolated chloroma. Isolated chloroma is a green-colored tumor whose cells originate in the bone marrow and that frequently develops into leukemia. Researchers reviewed the medical records of 7 patients with isolated chloroma and the data from 83 patients identified in the published literature to determine the effect of chemotherapy on the course of their disease. Fifty-four percent of the patients with isolated chloroma received chemotherapy at the time of their diagnosis. Nearly twice as many patients with isolated chloroma who did not receive chemotherapy at the time of diagnosis developed leukemia. Patients with isolated chloroma immediately treated with chemotherapy lived longer than those left untreated. Patients with isolated chloroma younger than 51 years of age had better survival rates than older patients.

Report of the NIH panel to define principles of therapy of HIV infection
Article Abstract:
A panel convened by the National Institutes of Health reports 11 scientific principles underlying the treatment of HIV infection. Persistent HIV reproduction in the body damages the immune system and CD4 counts and viral blood levels can indicate the magnitude of immunosuppression. Treatment should be individualized according to the degree of immunosuppression. Combination drug therapy can effectively inhibit viral reproduction. Therapy should be provided to children, teenagers and women. People with low viral levels may still be infectious and should follow proper precautions.
