Genetic fingerprinting
Article Abstract:
A personal account of an exploration into human genetic variability at the most fundamental level of variation in DNA, and of a wholly unanticipated excursion into the world of forensic medicine and the law is presented. A scientist describes the way he tested the idea of detecting multiple hypervariable loci by hybridizing a core repeat probe to an arbitrarily chosen Southern blot carrying DNA from a family group plus a range of DNAs from various nonhuman species.

Sirt1: A metabolic master switch that modulates lifespan
Article Abstract:
Various studies are conducted to show that Sirt1, a nuclear deacetylase that removes acetyl groups from specific nuclear proteins, is involved in aging and also controls hepatic glucose metabolism through the regulation of PPArgamma coactivator. The results prove that Sirt1 serves as a systemic metabolic master switch, as it modulates aging by serving as the key decoder to translate caloric restriction to increase the lifespan.
