Getting the facts on falls
Article Abstract:
Falls and fall-related events are almost universally monitored in institutional trending of adverse events. Institutions need to track the number, type and severity of injuries related to falls. The American Nurses Assoc. has proposed a standardized methodology for monitoring patient injury rates. Using forms that prompt required documentation would cut down on labor. Institutions should define fall-related categories and outcomes so data will be more meaningful. Sharing findings is encouraged so standardized definitions and reporting methods can be developed to aid in comparing data.

Older adults living with chronic pain: an opportunity for improvement
Article Abstract:
Nurses should routinely assess older adults for presence of chronic pain and should advocate for appropriate treatment when indicated. Clinical practice guidelines from the American Geriatrics Society encourage such an approach. Nurses should be familiar with clinical practice guidelines for the disciplines related to their areas of practice.
