Glycemic control and the risk for coronary heart disease in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus: the Finnish studies
Article Abstract:
Evidence suggests that patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and high blood sugar levels are at greater risk for heart disease. A researcher presented the results from two studies that assessed the incidence of heart disease in middle-aged and elderly male patients with NIDDM in reference to the patients' baseline blood sugar levels. Of the 133 middle-aged patients with NIDDM, 28 died of heart disease within 10 years. Of the 229 elderly patients with NIDDM, 15 died of heart disease within 3.5 years. Patients with progressively higher blood sugar levels were at greater risk for heart attack or death independent of the type of treatment received. The blood sugar comparisons are based, however, on only one blood test done for each patient.

The Stroke Prevention Policy Model: linking evidence and clinical decisions
Article Abstract:
Details about a statistical model for studying stroke prevention called the Stroke Prevention Policy Model (SPPM) are presented. The SPPM has been formulated based on data from research studies and patient data from electronic databases. Trends seen with the SPPM can help support but not replace decisions made by health care providers. This method of synthesizing patient data can be more cost-effective than traditional research methods and guide clinicians in providing more consistent treatment.
