Going Dutch and confusing roles
Article Abstract:
The Dutch health minister has suggested that nurses should take on more responsibility and this has raised concerns that they are being urged to carry out tasks which should be done by doctors. The Individual Health Care Professions Act also encourages nurses to take on more responsibility, however, the nurses are complaining that they are not being given more authority in their roles. Concern is also being raised that nurses are being given inappropriate tasks, such as prescribing strong drugs, as a move to save money.

Smack, crack and pot
Article Abstract:
Holland is currently at odds with other EU countries over its liberal approach to drugs and the Dutch health minister, Els Borst-Eilers, has had to defend her government's liberal policy. The growing, sale or traffic of drugs is illegal in Holland but offenders are rarely imprisoned. Holland considers that it is more effective to educate the young about the dangers of drugs, and also to provide medical care for addicts. This tolerant approach means that the problem remains visible and manageable rather than hidden.
