Bicycle-riding circumstances and injuries in school-aged children: a case-control study
Article Abstract:
Bicycle injuries in children may be associated with slow riding speed, riding a distance from home, and riding on the sidewalk. Researchers interviewed 64 children seen at an emergency department for bike injuries and their parents about their bike riding behaviors at the time of their injury. Children ranged in age from seven to 18 years. Fourteen children (16%) wore bike helmets. Riding a bike slower than normal speed was the strongest risk factor for injury. Children who were 0.75 mile or more from home were also more likely to be injured than children riding closer to home.

Children's bicycle helmet attitudes and use: association with parental rules
Article Abstract:
Children may wear bicycle helmets if helmet usage is strictly enforced by parents. Researchers interviewed 169 children ages five to 14 and their parents about bicycle helmet usage. While 48 children (28%) owned helmets, only 21 children said they wore helmets for an overall usage rate of 12%. Children whose parents strictly enforced helmet usage were more likely to say they always wore their helmets (88%) than did children whose parents did not consistently enforce usage (19%). Pediatricians may help to promote bicycle helmet use by talking to patients and their parents.
