HHS survey: Drug firm gifts violated AMA standards
Article Abstract:
About 25% of gifts by drug companies to physicians violate AMA standards, reveals a survey conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services's Inspector General Richard Kusserow. The study shows that physicians who often prescribed the drug companies' products were offered a larger number of gifts. AMA guidelines, which were strengthened in Oct 1992, include disapproval of expensive gifts that are not patient-related. Distribution of drug samples are suspect, as are payments for pharmaceutical consultation.

Stakes are high when you blow the whistle
Article Abstract:
Whistle-blowers in the medical professions are subjected to intense pressure, as illustrated by the case of Dr Kildare Clarke, who was transferred from his position at Kings County Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY. Clarke admits discussing his findings with the media after the hospital failed to respond to his reports of substandard practice. Most physicians refrain from becoming talebearers because they fear retribution.
