HIV Prevalence and Associated Risks in Young Men Who Have Sex With Men
Article Abstract:
Many gay men are still at risk of HIV infection. This was the conclusion of The Young Men's Survey, which surveyed and tested 3,492 15- to 22-year-old gay men in seven large cities. The number of men who tested positive for HIV ranged from 2.2% to 12%. Older men were more likely to test positive, as were blacks and Hispanics. Of the 249 men who tested positive, only 46 knew they were infected before the test and only 19 were taking AIDS drugs. Overall, 41% of the men still had unprotected anal sex.

Racial/ethnic differences in demographic, partner type, partner type-specific condom use, drug use, and HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) are examined using data from multisite venue-based survey of men. Associations of these factors with HIV infection and their influence on racial/ethnic disparities in HIV prevalence are estimated.
