Evidence for recent growth of the HIV epidemic among African-American men and younger male cohorts in Los Angeles County
Article Abstract:
The HIV epidemic appears to have grown recently among certain subgroups in the United States, especially among African-American homosexuals. Researchers used census data and data from an AIDS surveillance registry to calculate the progression of the HIV epidemic among men in distinct age groups and ethnic minorities in Los Angeles County. They compared their results to HIV prevalence data obtained from public clinics that treat sexually transmitted diseases. Analysis was restricted to injection drug users and men who have sex with men (MSWM). Although HIV incidence appears to have reached a plateau in the general population after peaking in the mid-1980s, much later peak rates of HIV infection were seen among younger groups, minority groups, and injection drug users. The HIV infection rate among African-American MSWM was the highest, and does not appear to have reached a plateau.

Seroreactivity to HIV-1 V3 subtypes A to H peptides of Argentinian HIV-positive sera
Article Abstract:
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using peptides from the most common strains of HIV can be used to determine which viral strains are present in a population. Blood samples from 175 HIV-infected Argentinians were tested using an ELISA containing eight synthetic peptides from viral strains A through H. About 60% of the samples reacted to subtype B, 13% to subtype F and 9% to subtype A.
