HIV disease and the endocrine system

Article Abstract:

AIDS patients and individuals infected with HIV may develop complications that affect the endocrine system. The endocrine system is the network of glands that secret different types of hormones. AIDS patients often develop different types of infections that affect the adrenal gland, the most common being cytomegalovirus infections. Some individuals infected with HIV may develop abnormalities that affect the thyroid gland. HIV infection can also affect the metabolism of different nutrients and the balance of sodium and calcium in the body. HIV infection can affect the secretion of testosterone and other sex hormones in men. No information is available about the affect of HIV infection on the secretion of sex hormones in women. Individuals infected with HIV may be more vulnerable to different types of complications that affect the pancreas than other individuals.

Eating disorders

Article Abstract:

Many patients with eating disorders have medical complications that need to be addressed. Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Eating disorders can adversely affect the heart, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, reproductive system, nervous system, endocrine system and metabolism. It can cause anemia and other blood disorders. Some extremely ill patients may have to be hospitalized to receive treatment for these complications. Others can be treated as outpatients. They may require psychiatric treatment as well as medical treatment. Psychiatric drugs should be reserved for patients who have some psychiatric illness in addition to the eating disorder.
