HIV prevention and control in rural areas
Article Abstract:
Nurse practitioners (NPs) can have an important role in HIV prevention and control activities in rural areas. The Healthy People 2000 report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services calls for at least 75% of primary care providers to perform HIV-prevention counseling. These services are in particular need in rural areas, where health care personnel are in short supply, HIV programs are lacking, and many clients hide their sexual and drug history. NPs should educate themselves about HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases and participate in prevention efforts.
