HIV testing behaviors in a population of inner-city women at high risk for HIV infection
Article Abstract:
Many women at high risk for HIV infection may not get tested or may get tested but not return for their test result. In a study of 705 inner-city women, 75% reported having at least one HIV test and 46% were tested on more than one occasion. Twelve percent never returned to receive the results of their test. Women engaged in high-risk behaviors such as intravenous drug use or sex with an HIV-positive person were more likely to have multiple tests. However, many continued to participate in the same high-risk behaviors. Twenty-five percent of those who engaged in high-risk behaviors never got tested.

Prevalence and incidence of hepatitis C virus infection among young adult injection drug users
Article Abstract:
Young adult injection drug users (IDU's) are in a situation of extremely high risk for infection by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) with even minimal reuse of syringes. Among IDU's, HCV prevalence may be anywhere between 50% and 95%. For example, in Baltimore, Maryland, the rate of HCV was 85% for IDU's compared against 1.6% for gay men, another group considered high risk for such infectious diseases. The institution of freely available syringes to prevent multiple use coupled with education programs to make the levels of risk known is urgently needed.

Update on the seroepidemiology of human immunodeficiency virus in the United States household population: NHANES III, 1988-1994
Article Abstract:
Data from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) indicate that about half a million US residents are infected with the AIDS virus. Of the 11,203 people in the survey tested for HIV, 59, or 0.32%, were HIV-positive. This translates to 461,000 people nationwide. However, the survey participants were between the ages of 18 and 59 and resided in households. Thus, the survey did not include homeless people, prisoners and others at high risk of infection.
