HPTN 024 study: Histologic chorioamnionitis, antibiotics and adverse infant outcomes in a predominantly HIV-1-infected African population
Article Abstract:
A HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 024 study evaluates the relationship between polymorphonuclear and mononuclear cell placental (chorioamnion) infiltrations and adverse infant outcomes that include mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV-1in a predominantly HIV-1 infected African population. It is found that histologic chorioamnionitis (HCA) is associated with preterm birth and decreased gestational age and birth weight, but is not prevented or reduced by antibiotic treatment, and placental infiltrations are not associated with MTCT of HIV.

Acute and chronic chorioamnionitis and the risk of perinatal human immunodeficiency virus-1 transmission
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the prevalence of acute and chronic chorioamnionitis among women infected with human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) and to determine the relative contribution of each to perinatal HIV-1 transmission. It was found that in a setting of high perinatal nevirapine use, acute chorioamnionitis was not associated with vertical HIV-1 transmission and risk for intrauterine transmission increased significantly when chronic chorioamnionitis was present.
