Healing Jesus
Article Abstract:
Liaison psychiatry links mental health services with doctors in general hospitals and concentrates on patients who attempt self-harm, because these patients are very likely to attempt something again. A liaison service which is staffed primarily by nurses is discussed. Costs are met by the hospital departments which use the service and the psychiatric nurses assess patients on the wards. They also advise doctors in general hospitals when the referred patients should be discharged, they plan continuity of care and also educate other medical staff about the issue of self-harm.

Depressed and suicidal clients: how nurses can help
Article Abstract:
A community psychiatric nurse describes her experiences with a suicidal client who had been referred to her by staff at a local hostel. The client, aged 21, was severely depressed and had behavioural problems, stemming from alleged sexual abuse by her father. She had been in care since she was 16 and had lived in several children's homes where she had made a number of attempts to commit suicide. The nurse's involvement with her patient showed her the importance of developing a close, trusting relationship with her client in order to help her cope with life.
