Helping Elizabeth face the world
Article Abstract:
A birthmark was successfully removed from a young child's face using tissue expanders. Patient and parents were psychologically prepared for the disfiguring effect of the treatment. Medical staff explained each procedure and the particular care problems associated with it. The child was distracted using play therapy to avoid distress. Role play using a soft toy enabled successful suture removal without a general anaesthetic.
