Hepatitis B prevalence in an unregistered prenatal population: implications for neonatal therapy
Article Abstract:
Women in labor who have never received prenatal care should be tested for drug use. If the test is positive, their newborn infants should be vaccinated against hepatitis B. A survey of 208 women in labor who had never received prenatal care found that 14 had hepatitis B. All 14 tested positive in a urine drug screen. None of the 112 women who tested negative for drugs had the disease. A survey of 1,555 women being examined in a prenatal clinic found that only 12 had hepatitis B. Of 153 women in this group who admitted using drugs, five had hepatitis B. Of the remaining 1,402 women who denied using drugs, only seven had the disease. Pregnant women who use drugs and do not receive prenatal care are more likely to have hepatitis B than pregnant women who receive prenatal care and do not use drugs.
