Herpes gladiatorum at a high school wrestling camp - Minnesota
Article Abstract:
An outbreak of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), herpes gladiatorum, occurred in a Minnesota wrestling camp in the summer of 1989. One hundred seventy-five male high school students from different parts of the country attended the camp. The outbreak occurred during the last week of the three-week session, and symptoms included the appearance of lesions on the skin and in the eyes. Questionnaires were completed by 171 of the participants (98 percent). The average age was 16 years old and the students had participated in competitive wresting for an average of four years. All of the affected students developed the infection during the camp session or within a week after leaving the camp. A total of 60 (35 percent) of the wrestlers met the clinical criteria for herpes gladiatorum, and the infection was most severe among those who were in the heaviest weight group. In an editorial note, the Centers for Disease Control points out that herpes gladiatorum was first reported in the mid-1960s, and outbreaks also occurred among three high school wrestling teams in Wisconsin during 1988. Antibodies against HSV-1 are normally low among white adolescents who are therefore highly susceptible to infection. The virus is primarily passed by skin contact and therefore examinations for lesions should be performed prior to competitive wrestling. Implementation of this preventative measure could have averted this latest outbreak. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Prep school
Article Abstract:
UK industries are obliged to change their labelling and packaging due to the changes made by the EC (European Community) preparations directive. One of the main changes is that safety data sheets need to be produced using EC format and calculations. Safeware Systems has crated a new computer programme called Safemix to produce such data sheets. The Safemix programme is able to calculate chemical mixtures in seconds. The database contains all formulation details and individual classifications, contained in Annex 1 of the directive.

Play school
Article Abstract:
Play therapy has proved beneficial in the treatment of attention deficit-hperactivity disorder. An eight year old boy exhibiting behavioural problems was admitted to a hospital in-patient unit for medical and psychological assessment. A hospital play specialist's initial attempts to improve behaviour failed. However, the boy responded to the introduction of play therapy. Use of a sock puppet helped develop social skills and self-confidence. Praise and reward reinforced appropriate behaviour.
