Hormonal treatment for bleeding irregularities in Norplant implant users
Article Abstract:
A combination oral contraceptive pill may the control heavy bleeding sometimes experienced by Norplant contraceptive users. Norplant is an implanted contraceptive that is effective for five years, and commonly causes heavy bleeding in the first year after implantation. Researchers in the Dominican Republic treated 150 Norplant users with daily pills containing ethinyl estradiol, a combination of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, or placebo. Bleeding ceased within three days of taking the combination pill for 91% of the women, whereas 67% of women taking ethinyl estradiol and 15% of women taking placebo stopped bleeding within three days. Stomach pain and nausea were reported by 33% to 40% of hormone users, but symptoms did not lead women to discontinue use.

Dilatation of the urinary tract during pregnancy: proposal of a curve of maximal caliceal diameter by gestational age
Article Abstract:
Dilation of the kidney calices seems to be normal in many pregnant women. The calices are the part of the kidney that collect urine, which then passes into the ureter and into the bladder. Researchers used ultrasound to measure the diameter of the kidney calices in 1,395 pregnant women and 181 women between the second and fifth days after birth. Only 15% had dilation of the urinary tract in the first trimester but by the second and third trimester, 20% had dilation of the left kidney and 50% had dilation of the right kidney. After birth, only 6% of the women had dilated kidneys, almost all on the right side.
