Hormone replacement and breast cancer: a remaining controversy?
Article Abstract:
The use of hormone replacement therapy appears to improve the quality of life and duration for many women who are at risk for osteoporosis or heart disease. More than 30 studies have been conducted on the effect of hormone replacement therapy on breast cancer, but it is still unclear whether this risk exists. In the long term, the use of hormone replacement therapy may increase the risk of breast cancer, but the studies show no association with breast cancer in short-term use. More research is needed to assess the effects of estrogen-progestin therapy, a relatively new treatment.

Excessive Dietary Intake of Vitamin A Is Associated with Reduced Bone Mineral Density and Increased Risk for Hip Fracture
Article Abstract:
Excessive amounts of vitamin A in the diet may increase the risk of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a loss of bone mass that can lead to fractures. In a study of over 1,000 women, each 1-milligram (mg) increase in daily intake of vitamin A increased the risk of hip fracture 68%. An intake greater than 1.5 mg per day lowered bone density significantly compared with an intake less than 0.5 mg per day. Women who received this much vitamin A in their diet had twice the risk of hip fracture.
