Hospice Care in the United States: A Conversation With Florence S. Wald
Article Abstract:
Florence S. Wald discusses how she became involved in the US hospice movement. Hospice teams consist of doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers who help terminally ill patients and their families deal with death and provide palliative care for the patient and support for the family.Wald received a master's degree from Yale School of Nursing in 1941 and eventually became dean of the school. In 1969, she visited St Christopher's Hospice in London, which had been established in 1967. When she returned, she and others established the first US hospice, the Connecticut Hospice in Branford, in 1974.
