How essential is an essential drugs policy?

The WHO initiative hopes promote efficient and rational use of drug therapies in developed countries, while providing money for developing countries to receive the essential life-saving drugs they need. It promotes national drug policies while helping nations make the most of scarce health care resources.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been at the forefront in combatting leprosy and guinea-worm disease. The use of multidrug therapy has cured 8 million leprosy patients since 1986, and WHO's goal is total elimination by 2,000. Guinea-worm disease has been cut by 97% since 1986.
