Hugh Herr, associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Massachusetts, has designed a new generation of prosthetic limbs that rely on electronic sensing. Herr has given his views on prosthetic devices and his new projects involving designing prostheses for running that will enable amputees to sprint faster than any biological limb.

Lack of training in biodefense research leading to dangerous leaks

The rapid expanse in biodefense research combined with very little federal oversight and training has led to dangerous leaks and mishaps. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has established a lab for lethal airborne viruses and is planning to give on-the-job training to scientists.
