Human T cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) molecular genotypes and disease outcome
Article Abstract:
A mutation in the tax gene of the human T cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) may predispose people infected with the virus to develop tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM). This was demonstrated by comparing the genetic structure of the virus in two groups of HTLV-I-infected people: Japanese and Columbians. Columbians with TSP/HAM were more likely to have a mutation in the tax gene than Japanese with adult T cell leukemia. The incidence of TSP/HAM is higher in Columbia than Japan even though the incidence of HTLV-I infection is lower.

HIV-1 pol sequences from India fit distinct subtype pattern
Article Abstract:
A new subtype of HIV-1 has been identified in India. It was discovered by sequencing the viral pol gene in blood samples taken from 5 HIV-positive individuals in various regions of India. Both pol and env genes indicate that the virus belongs to the C subtype. This indicates that HIV-1 was introduced into India fairly recently. HIV infection was first reported in India in 1986. It is most common in urban areas and is transmitted primarily by heterosexual sex.
