Hyperlipidemia and insulin resistance are induced by protease inhibitors independent of changes in body composition in patients with HIV infection
Article Abstract:
Protease inhibitors cause increased blood levels of blood sugar, insulin, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol. These changes occur independently of any change in weight or body composition. However, these drugs are very effective in suppressing HIV infection so their benefits may outweigh their side effects.

Altered fat distribution in HIV-positive men on nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor therapy
Article Abstract:
HIV patients who take a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor may experience a re-distribution of fat on their body. This appears to be directly caused by the drug and not by HIV infection per se.

Cross-sectional and longitudinal evaluation of body composition in men with HIV infection
Article Abstract:
Body wasting that occurs in AIDS patients is not limited to lean tissue as some researchers believe. Researchers used dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and bioelectrical impedance analysis to measure body composition in 32 HIV-infected men with body wasting, 46 HIV-infected men with normal weight and 32 HIV-negative men. The men with body wasting had lost both fat and lean body mass compared to the other groups. Much of the difference in weight was fat. A second analysis in 20 HIV-infected men revealed that the amount of lean body mass lost depended on baseline body fat.
