Increased serum C reactive protein may reflect events that precede radiographic progression in osteoarthritis of the knee
Article Abstract:
Elevated blood levels of C reactive protein may predate the development of knee osteoarthritis. However, it is not clear whether this information could be of diagnostic use. C reactive protein is often produced during inflammation.

Determinants of disability in osteoarthritis of the knee
Article Abstract:
Factors that are important in evaluating the impairment of elderly patients with osteoarthritis of the knee include the strength of the quadriceps (thigh) muscle, knee pain and age. Osteoarthritis is a noninflammatory joint disorder that mainly occurs in elderly individuals. A study evaluated 70 elderly men and 89 elderly women with osteoarthritis of the knee. Forty-four percent of the patients experienced knee pain, 32% experienced some level of disability and 48% had evidence of disease on an X-ray of their knee. A significant association was found between level of impairment and quadriceps strength, knee pain and increased age.

Identification and functional importance of plasma kallikrein in the synovial fluids of patients with rheumatoid, psoriatic, and osteoarthritis
Article Abstract:
The presence of plasma kallikrein (PK) in joint fluid may lead to joint inflammation and pain, as experienced by rheumatoid arthritis patients. Researchers aspirated joint fluid from 66 arthritis patients and measured amidase (an enzyme) activity and immune reactions that indicated the presence of plasma kallikrein (PK). PK is a component of kinins, which make capillary membranes more permeable and cause sensory nerves to feel pain. arthritis. The bradykinin-1 (BK-1) receptor, in particular, may be involved. The development of BK-1 antagonists may be useful as a treatment for joint inflammation.
