Impact of Vaccines Universally Recommended for Children-United States, 1900-1998
Article Abstract:
Vaccines have substantially reduced the risk of death from various diseases but it will be a challenge to vaccinate children as more and more vaccines are developed. Although vaccines against smallpox, rabies, typhoid, cholera and plague existed in 1900, they were not widely used. Since then, vaccines against 21 other diseases have been created. As a result, smallpox has been eliminated, polio has been eliminated in the Westeren hemisphere, and the rates of measles and Hib infection in children have been dramatically reduced. In 1997, more than 90% of young children in the US received adequate doses of DTP, poliovirus, and Hib vaccines.
