Importance of findings on the initial evaluation for cancer in patients with symptomatic idiopathic deep venous thrombosis
Article Abstract:
It may be advisable to perform complete examinations on patients with deeply located blood clots in order to detect the presence of possible cancer. Researchers examined the medical records or responses to questionnaires from 986 middle-aged patients suspected of having deep blood clots. Of the 142 patients identified with deep blood clots, 12% were also found to have cancer within 34 months of the initial examination. All of the patients with at least one abnormal finding and none of the patients with no abnormal findings at the initial examination developed cancer during the study period.

Adult (not internal) medicine
Article Abstract:
Changing the name of internal medicine to adult medicine could serve to clarify the role and function of the internist. The term internal and the corresponding name, internist, is often misunderstood and associated with an intern, or a doctor in training. The designation of adult medicine better conveys the scope of the specialty. It defines the patient population and describes the scientific treatment of acute disease as well as its prevention, and the comprehensive medical care of adults.

A new and improved system for excluding the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis
Article Abstract:
People with few physical signs of deep vein thrombosis and a negative D-dimer test probably do not have deep vein thrombosis and can be spared further testing. Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in the large veins in the legs. The D-dimer test can detect the presence of blood clots in a patient's blood.
