Impotence
Article Abstract:
Impotency can have a devastating on a man's emotional and psychological health. Impotence, or erectile dysfunction, is the inability to have or maintain an erection for sexual pleasure. Millions of men are affected by erectile dysfunction, but many are unaware of recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder. Both physical and psychological factors can contribute to the cause of erectile dysfunction. Physical factors include any disorders that interfere with the blood supply or innervation of the penis. Psychological factors include depression, anxiety and relationship problems. A detailed mental and sexual history should be obtained from patients with erectile dysfunction. They should also have a physical examination and certain types of diagnostic tests. Different medical and surgical treatments have been developed for erectile dysfunction. Most patients also can benefit from psychotherapy and behavioral therapy.

A pill for impotence
Article Abstract:
An oral medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, or impotence, has received much attention in the media but long-term clinical use will be needed to determine its effectiveness. A 1998 study found that sildenafil (Viagra) was more effective than a placebo in men with erectile dysfunction. Before sildenafil, the only effective drug, alprostadil, had to be injected into the penis or inserted into the urethra. A pill that can be taken by mouth has obvious advantages. The drug works by inhibiting the breakdown of a chemical called cyclic GMP, which promotes smooth muscle relaxation.
