In a Barbie world
Article Abstract:
Nurse Barbie Vaughan left the UK health charity King's Fund in Nov 1998. She launched, during her seven years with King's Fund, a number of initiatives which will have lasting impact in the nursing profession. These initiatives include development of the role of lecturer practitioner and an investigation into the management of intermediate care. Vaughan believes that restructuring of health care services to cater in a new way for patients requiring intermediate care could have far-reaching implications on health professional education and nursing development.

The last laugh
Article Abstract:
Research by business psychologist Sandi Mann analyses emotions at work. The study of 550 workplace conversations shows that nurses often use the so-called 'lawyer script', characterised by lack of warmth and an emotionless face, used to convey professionalism and neutrality. It is shown that workers conceal their true emotions in most of the conversations they have with colleagues, leading to stress in professions such as nursing. It is essential that humour is used as a coping mechanism in such circumstances, says mental health promotion specialist Alex Maw.
