In search of therapeutic nursing: maxi-nurses
Article Abstract:
A special-care unit for longer-stay patients needing intensive care in a US hospital is managed by nurses rather than doctors. There is less emphasis on using complicated technology and more on rehabilitating the patients. The nurses decide who is admitted and discharged and nurses work together to make important decisions. The other unit, in Canada, is also managed by nurses. It is in a house and is open to the public. It offers counselling and advice for sick people on a drop-in basis. Both centres show the ways nursing practice can be developed.

Evaluation of nurse-led in-patient care
Article Abstract:
Extensive research into nurse-led in-patient care has been undertaken on Byron ward, a nursing development unit (NDU) at King's College Hospital, London. Most patients admitted to the ward were older, with at least three medical problems on admission. The need for rehabilitation was a key reason for referral, although assessing nurses generally identified at least one need in addition to rehabilitation. The research did not clarify whether those patients who were identified as suitable for a nurse-led ward actually benefited from it.

The costs of care: economic evaluation of treatments
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the economic assessment of medical treatments are discussed. The forms of economic assessment are cost-effectiveness, cost minimization, cost utility and cost benefit. It must be recognized that reduced costs do not necessarily bring cost-effectiveness.
