Increased plasma levels of ED1+ cellular fibronectin precede the clinical signs of preeclampsia
Article Abstract:
Preeclampsia is a condition of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure, swelling and protein in the urine. This condition is poorly understood and many theories about its cause have been proposed. Abnormal activity of platelets, cells involved in the clotting mechanism, has been implicated. One theory postulates that damage to the cells lining blood vessels, the endothelial cells, causes blood vessels to become more sensitive to chemicals which tend to raise blood pressure. Fibronectin, a protein that circulates in the blood, is involved in helping cells (including platelets) to clump during blood clotting. Fibronectin was measured in 33 women with and 36 pregnant women without preeclampsia. Higher levels of fibronectin were found in preeclamptic patients. The risk of preeclampsia increased as the level of fibronectin increased. Although the events preceding fibronectin release from endothelial cells are not understood, it is thought that since fibronectin is localized in the endothelial cells, damage to blood vessels would cause fibronectin to be released into the blood. The increased fibronectin in the blood of preeclamptic patients supports the theory implicating endothelial cell damage in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. Fetal fibronectin as a marker to discriminate between ectopic and intrauterine pregnancies
Article Abstract:
A low fibronectin level in vaginal secretions does not seem to be useful in identifying women with an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the human embryo attaches to the inside of the Fallopian tubes rather than the uterus. Researchers measured fetal fibronectin in vaginal secretions from 110 women in their first trimester of pregnancy. Some had evidence of ectopic pregnancy and others had a normal pregnancy. Many women with an ectopic pregnancy had lower fetal fibronectin levels than the women with normal pregnancies. However, the test was not accurate enough in identifying ectopic pregnancy.

The fibronectin receptor (alpha)5 integrin subunit is upregulated by cell-cell adhesion via a cyclic AMP-dependent mechanism: Implications for human trophoblast migration
Article Abstract:
The expression and subcellular organization of the fibronectin receptor (alpha)5 integrin subunit during the differentiation of human, trophoblasts in vitro, and the role of cyclic adenosine monophosphate in the process was investigated. The data provided evidence that the alpha5 integrin mediates binding of human trophoblasts to fibronectin and was implicated in the regulation of trophoblast migration.
